Who is Barrow-Wight?

Призрак знаменитого мира Средиземья имеет древнескандинавские корни. Северные народы звали его Draugr или vǣttr. Даже в XIX веке среди норвежских фермеров были сильны страхи перед так называемыми «веттерами» - злыми духами, населявшими открытые в те времена древние курганы викингов.

В произведениях Толкиена (кои не ограничены "Властелином колец" и "Хоббитом") Умертвия (также Могильщики) - это злые духи людей, которых Король-чародей Ангмара заключил в курганы после Северных войн. Здесь, в могилах они ждали час, когда восстанет зло. Именно тогда они должны были пробудиться и встать на сторону Тёмного Владыки, используя свои леденящие кровь способности.

Могильщики могли напасть, но их было легко победить при хорошем вооружении.

Умертвия помогали Ангмару в войнах против Арнорского королевства Артэдайн.

В книге "Властелин колец: Братство кольца" их встретили хоббиты во главе с Фродо, когда шли в Ривенделл. Хоббиты попались в узы зла и чуть было не погибли, но им на помощь пришёл Том Бомбадил и отогнал злых тварей.

Увы, персонажи были стерты из экранизации Питера Джексона. Поэтому свою новую работу мы посвящаем незаслуженно забытым призракам курганов Средиземья.

The main hero of the new mini-album of the project "reforMAA" is a character of John Ronald Ruel Tolkien. Let's get acquainted. The phantom of the famous Middle-earth world has Old Norse roots. The northern peoples called him Draugr or vǣttr. In Norway, farmers of the 19th century were still concerned about "vetter" (wights) around old viking barrows, when these were first excavated. In the works of Tolkien (which are not limited to "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit"), Barrow-Wights are the evil spirits, which were sent to the Barrow-downs by the Witch-king of Angmar after Northern wars. Here, in the graves, they were waiting for an hour, when evil would arise. It was then that they had to awaken and stand on the side of the Dark Lord, using their blood-chilling abilities. Barrow-Wights could attack, but they were easily defeated with good weapons. They helped Angmar in the wars against the Arnor Kingdom of Artadine.

In the book "The Lord of the Rings: Brotherhood of the Ring" Frodo Baggins and company were trapped in the Barrow-downs, and nearly slain by a barrow-wight. It was mentioned in The Lord of the Rings Appendix A that Frodo was trapped in the cairn of the last prince of Cardolan; Merry's exclamation on waking from his trance suggests this. Frodo sliced off the wight's hand; then, when the wight extinguished the dim light in the cavern where the company was imprisoned, Frodo called upon Tom Bombadil, who expelled the wight from the barrow. Alas, the characters were erased from the adaptation of Peter Jackson. Therefore, we devote our new work to the undeservedly forgotten ghosts of the mounds of Middle-earth.
